Paperwork
WARNING: The photo below and this subject are not for the faint of heart.
Conducting an annual review of expenses is not my idea of fun but must be done. Thankfully Quicken makes the task more tolerable and less time consuming. Note the reading glasses, for all the fine print. Maybe it is time I shifted to doing our taxes on the PC with one of those tax programs.
There is still more to do and one paper from the bank that is needed…. Then it’s off to the accountant to see if he can find more deductions for us. Hopefully we will be getting a refund.

Busted!!!
A woman's purse is usually a private thing. You do not go into another person's purse.
Apparently the temptation was too great. I discovered the trespass, when I uploaded my pictures. There were some photographs that I had not taken. While I was sleeping, my middle son decided he wanted to take some pictures. He went into my purse removed the camera case, took the camera from the case, shot his photographs, replaced the camera in the case and put it back in my purse.
I was pleasantly surprised his pictures were pretty good, perhaps he should get his own camera.

Can't see the forest...
There are times when I get so overwhelmed that I do not follow my own advice.
DUH!!!
I am like a sponge absorbing the minuscule and get bogged down in the details. Frustrated, that I cannot see the solution. So much to do... so little time.
So what do I do, take a break and practice avoidance. Usually that helps me refocus and find solutions.
P.S. It has come to my attention that my blog was mentioned. My apologies if you have come to see some really neat stuff. This was not "writes some really neat stuff" night for me.

Ignorance of the Law is no excuse
Somehow this statement has stuck with me. I do not want to suffer the consequences of ignorance nor do I want my son to. Last night’s “whine and wine” soiree was really a “whine and chia”.
We spoke of the rules and regulations, policies, expirations and penalties. We spoke of how our other children grow up and bear the responsibility of their actions. But for our children who we are (or will be) guardians for, they will suffer the consequences of any decision made where we were not aware of all the rules. This fear both motivates and annoys us. We must become knowledgeable about of the laws, policies, rules and regulations as best we can.
Social Security
Department of Retardation
Medicare
Guardianship
At times we feel the extraordinary burden of being aware that our ignorance may harm our child.
There are no How To books or manuals to guide us. We must find out for ourselves, where to go and what to do. We learn as we go.
I empathize with our Senior citizens that have been thrust into trying to understand Medicare/Medicaid part D. It is complicated, laden with obscure rules and penalties.
This is a tiring and seemingly a never ending process and the consequences are that their health, quality of life, and life can be threatened.
We remain parentally and legally liable.

Food memories
Rome, Italy – age 14
Prior to our trip the students were informed not to eat anything that was unfamiliar. I discovered that pizza was better back home than in Rome. Things were going smoothly, the food was good.
Going down for breakfast they had fruit on the table I took an orange cut it open, and it had some red inside. “Don’t eat strange food.” An orange is supposed to be orange, this one has red in it. It’s called an orange, why is it red?
Holding the orange I ask the water, “What is this?”
He replied, “An orange.”
Today I savored the orange and the memories.

Change
Embracing change can be challenging at times. We slip back into old habits, patterns of behavior. Sometimes we can pick up and forge ahead. Other times, we surrender in defeat.
Surrender is the easy way. It’s what we have been comfortable with. Reaching out, believe in yourself. Other may say that you cannot do it, you cannot change. Who are they to say that!
In ninth grade at a teacher conference, my mom and teacher were talking about my “C” average in class and that I should be placed in a lower level class.
“What? Removed from the class? I can do the work.”
It was agreed that I would stay in the class for another quarter. My “C” turned into an “A” and my placement was never questioned again.
Perhaps that determination will come my way once again.

Premature
Last weekend's warm temperatures along with a very cold December has fooled the trees into shedding the hard protective shell that surrounds the tender buds.
Most of us have protective shells. Once removed we are vulnerable, just like the buds. The shells do need to come off so we can grow, but doing so at the wrong time can do more damage than good.
Thankfully trees tend to be resilient and so are we.
Update on the powerball ticket... it is now lining my wastebasket.

If life is just gamble...
Gamble if you want to win. (The Lottery Song- Harry Nilsson)
Sometimes just getting out of bed is a gamble. Does anyone truly know the future? We make plans for the future: wills, schedules, etc. It is not always about money. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos are just a short drive away, but I've never been there to gamble. I prefer more of a sure thing. Sometimes even sure things do not work out.
So I take a chance, place my dollar bill down on a single Powerball ticket for tomorrow night.

Another snow day
It a wonder that exams will ever get done. It seems that the kids have been out of school more than in this month. Not saying that my boys do not enjoy having snow days... but it is a play now pay later situation. The white stuff today was wet and heavy.

Strange winter
The rate of flow has increased . Perhaps the spring thaw will not produce the normal flooding because the Connecticut River has flooded eight times since last October. One reason for so many floods has been the river has not gone back to normal, it has remained high.
This tributary is still running above normal from last week's rain.
Flooding is a normal occurance, but people still build in flood plains. Flood plains were once solely designated for farming. If the fields flood, you just have to wait for them to dry out before you plant. Damages were limited to late planting, resulting in a lower yield.
While this is not good for the farmer, hopefully the next year would be kinder.

Orchids
Every once in a while a bit of color is needed to brighten our view. In winter, you cannot go out into your garden and just pick some flowers. I came across these beauties at my local supermarket. They have lightened my mood.
Upon arising one morning I noticed that some of the blossoms had been nibbled.
Do I look guily to you?

Storm Repairs
Wednesday's storm brought down many lines. Repair crews were called in from afar. They have been blessed with warm weather, upper 50's, to work in.
After two nights of police lights flashing in my windows, the crew came, late this afternoon, to fix the downed wires. As you can see it took three trucks to put up a wire to one house.
The temperature will return to normal winter late Saturday afternoon. All repairs should be completed by Sunday.

blogging What a concept!
Lately I've been writing mostly about the weather. Thankfully it does change. Blogging these past few months has helped me realize that though I may never write a novel, I can write. It is strange what we believe about ourselves. Sometimes it takes others to point it out qualities that we don't realize that we have. they see what we cannot, or do not.
Subject matter sometimes eludes me. Dare I make some things public, I never realized how guarded I ready am.
Now photos, this is a perfect place to show what I see or have captured. Some things I haven't posted out of respect for others. It is enjoyable to see the results of my pictures. Hopefully there will be more.

Stubborn Oaks
Why is it that some Oak trees hang onto their leaves until the spring buds push them off?
Even during extreme wind, these spent brown leaves are locked in place. Nothing is more frustrating than to clean up your yard only to have these lovelies drop the leaves. This year the neighbor's Oak had dropped most of it's leaves so this Spring will not be too bad.

Fate, Destiny, Luck, Whatever.
Sometimes we take a different path. No particular reason to do so, but we do. Then something extraordinary happens.
Now some people say they don’t believe in luck, that you make things happen. I’m not too sure about that. I decided to take a different route home so I could take pictures of a waterfall.
That Arctic air produced some interesting results. Driving through the nearby college to head home, the roads are still icy in the shade. I notice a yellow SUV in the bushes. “Strange way to go off-roading,” I thought to myself. Then I noticed the woman standing near the vehicle. In good conscience I could not continue on. I had to stop and make sure she was ok and off to call for help. So I turned around to offer assistance.
She said she was fine and had called her husband. But I could not leave until help arrived.
So is this fate, destiny, luck or whatever?

Bright Night
Bright moonlight striking casts shadows upon the newly fallen snow. Still is the night. Nothing is stirring; the fresh blanket is not broken with footprints. It is too cold for creatures to venture out. It has been a long time since there has been frost on the windows, the intricate patterns like delicate lace.
The peaceful night is soothing, the temperatures are not. Single digits are to be feared. The stillness is broken by the sound of the furnace kicking in to take the chill out of the air.

Arctic Air
Awaking this morning to a new blanket of snow, blowing winds and plummeting temperatures, the newspaper was buried in a drift. Kicking the snow trying to find it was intimidating, as ice was lurking beneath. Last night’s rain changed to snow.
Turn sign that hang near traffic lights, blown parallel to the road. No one is going to stand under them and look up to read them.
Current temp 9°
Real Feel -16°
Wind gusts are up to 26mph.

On the road
Living in New England has its perks. Today I managed to visit 5 states by driving in driving rain, through mist and fog. Though I do not think that quantity is better than quality, still it is fun to say that that I was able to be in that many states in one day.
Morning mist in the Connecticut River Valley
Clearing skies? One can hope.
I surprised my son by showing up at his swim meet. Since he is a senior, this will be the last meet that I will see him swim in. Four years have flown by so quickly.

Where's the pictures?
There have been few opportunities to take pictures lately. Bespeak seems bland with out them. So here is one of my favorite pictures, (from my archives) that displays how I have been feeling lately.

Busy day.
Warm weather, bright winter sun. Leaves that were hiding beneath the white blanket appear. Melted snow produces mud.
Met my obligations for the day. Processed many thoughts. My pillow beckons.

Diverted, Delayed, Missed Calls
What a day! First I arrive home to see I missed a call from my precious first born in Key West. He left a message, at 12:43pm, that he has a job interview on Monday in New Jersey. Hmmm… does that mean he’s coming home for a bit this weekend?
Well it’s too late to return his call as he is on his 3 pm flight back from Miami to New York. I’ll call him when he’s had his three hour layover in Newark. I check the flight… wait… he’s in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, not Newark. I try calling his cell., leave a message, then off to class I go. I come back, he’s still not in Newark.
I’m thinking,” Boy, I’m glad I’m not on this trip.” Finally his flight arrives in Newark at 9:42pm. His connecting flight to Syracuse was supposed to leave at 8:45pm.
I get a call at about 10:30. His plane needed to refuel, that's why they were diverted. Yes, he is coming home this weekend and we talk about mail received. "Got to go.. gate change, new plane."
Finally he gets to leave Newark just after 11pm and will land in Syracuse after midnight. Classes start tomorrow, he has a 8am. The drive from Syracuse will take him about 3 hours. Two days of classes. Then to RPI in Troy, NY for a swim meet, then home to Connecticut. I think he’ll be a bit tired.
In comparison, my day was pretty tame.

Self-centered focus
Being egocentric is not necessarily a bad thing. We all have our preferences. We all have our pet peeves. (Lately, I have many pet peeves.)
It does not serve me well to dwell in misery and it does not work well for others if I am stuck on the pity pot for too long. Upon occasion, I vent and get the “poor me” out of my system. Thankfully, people do listen and provide their perceptions. Without their insight, I would stagnate.
After a conversation, a kind soul shared her perspective. I had an “Ah Ha” moment. The frustration drained from me as understanding came in. It makes sense, now I can formulate a plan of action. Whether the plan will be successful remains to be seen, but at least there is a course of action to take.
Now it is time to move forward.

Refreshed, soothed, relaxed.
Tonight was the time to return to the pool. Exercising in water is soothing to my soul. Though I hate the smell of chlorine, and the water temperature varies widely from day to day, it does not dampen my spirit. The repetitive movements are sequenced, my body remembers. Each time I go, my technique improves. Even when my back is acting up I still can go at my own pace, gaining some benefit from getting wet.
No Stress. No worries. Just focus on the movement and feel the water caressing you. Breath, feel the air energize your body.
Only Monday and Wednesday, too bad it is not every night.

Winter Project
I am out of my element, yet forge ahead. When I turned 18 it was a big deal. You were of legal age to drink, vote and you became legally liable for your own actions. Now it is the same except for the drinking part, which is a topic for another day.
Turning 18 for my middle son is something totally different. As far as he can tell, there will be no change. I must apply for legal guardianship. It is not that different from being a parent, except for the attorney fees, probate court, etc. Strange, a family has to pay legal fees to continue to look out for the interests of their child.
As I find out what must be done, list of “To Do’s” is growing. It would be nice if someone could do it for me, alas I must do it myself. Call the school, Department of Mental Retardation. For them it is routine work, not so for me.

Goodbye tree
Oh Christmas tree, you have served us well this holiday season. Your branches steeped in tradition and trimmed with memories of past years. Icicles dangled. Lights glowed. Candy canes that once graced your branches have been eaten.
Packing away our delicate treasures, which will not be seen again until December, saddens my heart. Stripped of all decorations, the time has come to let you go.

When time changes
My neighbor’s mother passed away last week, the wake is tonight, funeral tomorrow. At the funeral home they had thirteen ahead of her, so that is the reason for the delay.
I baked a plate of double chocolate brownies and brought them over. My neighbor had the stunned look. She said that she did not remember much of the past week. The loss of your mother is something that cannot be explained, but it is deeply felt.
Out of habit, you reach for the phone to call your mother. Gone is the opportunity to ask questions. Everything is a blur for a while.
Memories of my mother came flooding back. Her spirit is still with me. She was a determined and honest woman, who deserved more than what she had.
It has been over eight years that she has been gone. I cherish my memories of her. The good time we had; trips to the park to feed the ducks, watching the jets land at the airport, going to Vermont for an ice cream cone.
My mother taught me how to persevere and enjoy the adventure of life.

Aromatherapy for Men
Perfumers have missed the boat. Some candle companies come close with scents like Apple Pie. It seems in my house the aroma that sparks a reaction is roast anything, chicken, pot roast, etc. I should be pleased that my cooking is appreciated, maybe it is the winter doldrums that made me annoyed. Perhaps it is because the only time I get attention is when their stomach grumbles. Would Eau du Pot Roast would work?

Its official, I cannot go back
I grew up surrounded by farmland. Babci had 40 acres, a quarter mile down the road. There was another small farm across the street. The Connecticut River Valley is known for producing the finest wrapper tobacco for cigars. Everyone knew the names of the Tobacco farmers. For four years I came home from work with black tobacco tar glued to my fingers.
Now I have a very small vegetable and flower garden. Clinging to my family roots? Maybe not, because fresh does taste so good. Anyway I digress.
Today I went into a farm store. Country music was piped into the store. It’s been years since I was this kind of store. I was surprised to see the matchbox size toy tractor and attachable plows. Huge farm gates laid waiting for purchase. It was comforting in a way and yet I felt like I didn’t belong there. I could not wait to get out of the store and go someplace that is more suitable to my current lifestyle.
I have been in the suburbs too long to go back. I am more comfortable in the likes of Nordstrom’s, not working in the open field. Nail polish has replaced the black tar. But there was something wholesome about an honest day’s work on a farm.

Why blog?
It gives me an excuse to use my camera to see the beautiful things around me. Also it gives me the opportunity to increase my skill at writing. Am I succeeding? Who know or cares.
It gives me an excuse to pause and try and capture what my eyes see. Words cannot describe the visions that I try to capture with my camera. Sometimes I succeed in obtaining the image, sometimes not. It is wonderful to be able to share what has been presented to me.
It is great to have an outlet to get things out of my brain. Opportunities to vent about things that annoy me, share events, joys and sorrows.
Thank you, to those few of you that read my blog and enjoy my pictures. During my precious first born's last visit home, he discovered my blog. I was flustered, sort of like when someone discovers a secret about you. I felt vunerable, my heart and soul exposed. Did I want my son reading my blog? If he does so be it. If it was meant to remain private, it should not be in a blog on the internet. So it seems my posts are still somewhat guarded, but that will probably change with time.
It will be interesting to see what the next 80 days of my blogging will bring. Picture opportunities may be lesser in the winter. Autumn and the holidays present many sights. I have grown accustom to carrying my camera with me at all times. You never know what one will see.

Reality Bites
It is 1965, a sunny summer day in London, Ontario. While shopping, Babci (grandmother) thinks a dress can be purchased for $2.00. The price of dresses in the store average $15.00. I quietly snicker, as children should be seen and not heard.
Little did I realize the significance of that moment 40 years ago and it is not funny now. Prices will continue to rise and will salaries lag behind. Gone are the glory days of being comfortable. There was a time when insurance covered 80% of your medical costs. Now each year is bringing a $200/month increase just to meet premium costs just to have coverage. Then there are the co-pays and uncovered medical expenses.
The newscasters and papers inform us of a 17% increase in electrical costs (it will go up to a total of 22.4% in April.) Where is our increase of funds?
I was looking forward to our mortgage being paid off; we would have more disposable income, NOT! At the current rate it will be devoured by the increases in less than five years. Okay, so I am not an investor, reaping the benefits of corporate bean counters cutting corners or demanding increases. If things continue as they are, I will be a victim of corporate America. No, this is not a self-fulfilling prophecy, as I am aware that changes must be made.
Now I understand the financial challenges facing senior citizens in our country. I have always been one to live within our means, but that is getting more difficult. Am I turning into my Babci?

Hello 2006
Many start of the New Year with resolutions or hangovers, I have neither. What I do have are plans to work toward my vision which is taking care of myself by getting healthier through exercising and eating more fresh wholesome foods.
Wait! Isn’t that a resolution?
No, not really, because I am just moving forward on something that is already evolving.
My exercise class starts next week. Making minor changes to the menu, helps make the changes stick. Those little things add up over the course of the year. Last year I dropped twenty pounds as a result of the changes made. I'm looking forward to this year's results.
New snow rings in the New Year.
This was my second year of a “cash only” Christmas and it will be nice not to have all those bills. We have enough bills already. ;-) Insurance and heating costs are increasing, while we are basically on a fixed income. Oh well, I will just have to find a way to stay within our means. Hopefully our standard of living will not change much.
Visions of day trips still dance in my head. Boston in May, New York City, Vermont, New Hampshire, ... so many options. Perhaps even an overnight trip is in store for me. Maybe Potsdam in December?
This year my middle child will be turning 18 and guardianship is in order. But all that should be taken care of before Easter. My eldest will be graduating from college; the youngest will be getting his driver’s license.
So many wonderful changes are in store for this year. Let’s get started!
