Goodbye 2005

This was an interesting year. Many changes that I wanted to make were made; taking more pictures, eating healthier and getting exercise. Hooray, finally I found a form of exercise that is enjoyable, exercising in water. Subtle changes in the menu, made it easier for the family to adapt.

Getting accustomed to my husband’s semi-retirement is still challenging, like the hours that he works, midnight to noon on weekends and with him being home more.

Dealing with my back going into spasm, is something that I would rather have not had to face. Reoccurrence, right before Christmas, did not interfere with enjoying the holidays.

2005

Letting go and letting grow is new for me as my eldest son was out on a CO-OP 256 miles from home. Transition from childhood to adulthood, I am proud of the man he has turning out to be and he is proud of his achievements.

Celebrating a milestone birthday, I realized how blessed I am with my family and friends.

As 2005 draws to a close, I choose not to dwell in the past but look forward to the adventure of the future.

Gone again

The bustle of activity this morning centered around my precious first born's and his guests departure. Loading the cars was the main order of business. Cats were scooped up and stuffed into separate carriers. Seph was not pleased and started crying right away. James seemed comforted that he was leaving our home. Each cat was placed in the front seat of their owners’ car. Oil and other fluids were checked and added as needed.

fully loaded caravan

It is comforting that he is caravanning with a grad student for the 326 mile trip. They are picking up three other students on the way, two in Springfield, MA and one in Saratoga, NY. I do not know how they are all going to fit as both cars seem fully loaded already.

I am grateful that I do not have to make that 14 hour roundtrip anymore. However I do miss the time to myself, sights in the Adirondacks, and the opportunity to make stops along the way. Seeing Canada in the distance made me want to cross the border. Adventure…. new places, new faces. Longing for a temporary change of scenery, but must settle for going to Town Hall to pay taxes.

Busy day, busy house

Over night the occupancy has increased to 5 males - 1 female and 3 female felines - 2 male felines. Tomorrow the population will decrease. Needlesss to say the girls are not impressed with this young guy.

It does not look like it will be a quiet night.

Roadblocks, delays, detours

Sometimes our plans get derailed, we get detained or sidetracked. This is a normal course of life.

train crossing

This train detained me from arriving on time. Frustration ran though me. Perhaps I should have taken another route. What ??? It’s stopping! No! Okay, the switchman has arrived. The train goes in reverse and clears the road. The crossing bars rise. I’m Free.

time is fleeting

All too soon the end of this year will be here. Many will be taking stock, planning resolutions for the new year. Most make plans to change with no path or direction.

I use this time for review also, but not to make resolutions. Instead I set the direction on how to work toward my visions. Set a plan to make it happen.

Aftermath

No shopping today. Even with the sales, I have no desire to venture out. Thankfully I didn't have to stand in the long return lines.
It's a raining day, cold and damp with thunder and lightening. Since my spirits are already dampened,it's a great time to settle accounts and pay bills. It will be nice to know where our finances stand when the New Year starts. Luckly, this was a cash Christmas so we will not be looking a big bills next month. Well maybe big heating bills. My calico, Mitzi climbs on my lap to help. There is nothing like a purring cat to help soothe one's soul.

Merry Christmas ~ Wesolych Swiat

This year was different. The children patienly waiting for Dad to get home from work, amused themselves by stealing cookies from breakfast on.

Jello cookies

Instead of being left alone on Christmas, I invited my sister to join us for dinner. Dad was a bit short tempered after his 12 hour shift and it showed while we unwrapped gifts. Soon he was off to get some sleep and peace was restored. As night draws to a close I enjoy the candles in the window, the glow from the tree and think about the changes that are coming.

Wigilia - Christmas Eve

We would go to my mother's house for dinner and sit down to eat after the first star appeared in the sky. The table is always set with an extra place setting. It is a meatless dinner that begins with the breaking of the Oplatek (a thin wafer) and with exchanges of good wishes for health, wealth and happiness in the New Year.
As a child, once dinner started I knew that opening gifts was not far off. This anticipation has been passed down to my children.

Now I enjoy seeing the family, as we are all growing and changing. We still go to the same house, but it's my brother's now, not my mother's. I miss members that are no longer with us. The memories are fond ones that bring a smile to my face.

Ho, ho, ho ...

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, or so they say.Taking time for some fun is necessary. Here is a shot of me having some fun with Santa earlier this month.

Santa and Me

Baking is done, more cookies and cheesecake (for Christmas Eve dinner.) Hopefully I'll have some downtime soon.

Winter is here.

Christmas is almost here. Presents are under the tree. Snow is on the ground. It's 32º out. What is that sound I hear? A Cricket? In Winter? My youngest son confirms it. How odd, that a cricket should be singing his song in winter.

It's a Wrap

There's been lots of wrapping going on. All the gifts except for immediate family are wrapped.

All too soon, the wrap will be stripped away. At least there is time to enjoy the pretty packages under the tree.

End to a 5 Day Celebration

One of the most pleasurable experiences that I have had was tonight’s facial. It was a wonderful end to my celebration. I must thank my brother and my sister for giving me this hour and a half of heaven. I can see how this can be addicting. Words cannot describe the wonderful, relaxing experience.

One thing I did learn is that I should take more time to be kind to myself.

The Big Day

Special occasions should be noted with good friends, family and good cheer. To celebrate I decide to try something new, well at least new to me.

My First Cosmo
First Cosmo

It was sweet and light. Perfectly pleasing. (Thanks to Ocean's pictures of them, I just had to try one.) Lunch was ok, a few errands were run, then a trip to the doctor for my middle son.

I had informed my husband that I wasn't making plans for dinner they were up to him. Yes, he made dinner. Yes, there was small ordinary cake out of a box, still in the foil pan, from the supermarket shelf. My gift from him was a 50% share in a $1.00 lottery ticket.

My eldest son was so thoughtful with his gift selection. "Mom you like chocolate and you like pretzels, so I hope you like the chocolate covered pretzels." I was so touched by his thoughtfulness and yes, I do like chocolate covered pretzels. The youngest two, don’t drive and didn’t have the opportunity to get a gift.

My spirits were dampened, so I left for the pool.

The Plot

A plan was hatched during the party yesterday. My sons and my brother would put up the Christmas tree before my husband got home from work at noon. Speed decorating, it must be a guy thing, no sentiment, just a job to do. So much for tradition. The tree was cut, placed in the stand and centered, lights and decorations placed all in the record time of an hour and a half.

My husband can home and inquired about the tree, I told him the elves came during the night.

Surprise

Rarely am I caught off guard, but today I was. My sister and I were going for a pedicure. My toes definitely need a new coat of paint. "Bring sandals" she says. I decide to wear my sandals, sans socks, in the twenty degree weather. I gather the things I need to give my sister. Dang, I’m stuck in traffic, it’s slowed to a stop, there’s an accident up ahead. I call my sister, telling her I’m going to be late. Finally I arrive, take what I need to out of my car. My arms are laden with the items for my sister. She opens the door for me. I enter and voices call out “SURPRISE!!!!” Boy was I.

Now you know my age

Unbelievable!

Sickness has appeared in our home. Two out of four are ill. Coughing, sneezing. UGH! At least I am well. The phone rings:
"Your son placed second place from the NASCAR simulator."
"Excuse me? You must mean my other son?"
"No."
I'm stunned and it takes her a few minutes to convince me. Since he is home ill, and by mid-afternoon he's looking better, we go into the city for his prize. He won a cell phone, oil change and tickets to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Not just any cell phone, but the latest and greatest one with bluetooth, 1.3 mg camera, mp3 player and a mini SD card. He's excited.

I won

Next it's getting late; I have an appointment to get to. My husband is out getting the tree, I expect to get back before he will. My keys are gone, where are they? I'm a bit frustrated by this. Finally I ask my son to bring me my keys, he appears with them. Ok, now we can go. I back out of the driveway and my husband turns the corner. He's back with the tree! I can go to my appointment by myself.

Strange how things work out. Time to count my blessings.

Baby it's cold outside.

This is the second day of awaking to temperatures in the single digits. Running errands requires my sandals be replaced by closed toe shoes. My coat finally makes an appearance, but spends most of the time on the passenger seat of the car. The steering wheel reminds me that I should have worn gloves. Thankfully my car has a great heater and heated seats which warm quickly. All I need is a coffee to take the edge off the brisk cold; simple coffee, the old fashioned type, with sugar and milk. I have found Starbucks to be too bitter for my taste. Simple things are often the best. Run in to the warm stores and back to a car that has been parked facing into the sun.

Briskly walking back to my car, I hear, "Caw, Caw, Caw." Big Black soaring overhead, lands in a tree. "Caw, caw, caw." The call is taunting. "Caw, caw, caw." Another wingspan appears, the two birds are in the same tree. Who is the predator, who is the prey? My presence interrupts the interplay. I depart, leaving Nature to carry on.

tree stage

What are you looking at?

Now a plume of smoke catches my eye, I hope it's not a fire. It is so cold out, and then I see two firemen up in the ladder trucks bucket directing the spray from the hose toward the plume. Apparently three firemen were injured in the apartment house fire. This will make a sad Christmas for many.

Made my lists

I'll be checking it more than twice. Everything is listed as to what is on my schedule from now until Christmas. All those on my gift list have been mostly nice this year. There are a few more things that I have to purchase and having the lists helps me stay on track and keeps me from retracing my steps.

Too bad I'm having problems with my printer. Hopefully it will work tomorrow and I can have my lists in hand.

What day is this?

Beards are DONE!

Santa Cookie

Santas are wrapped. Santas wrapped All that is left to do is to package them. I'm a bit tired tonight.

In Progress

Over time we come to expect certain things during the holidays. It’s just not the same with out it. For our family at Christmas, it’s the Santa Cookies. I get to make them. The recipe makes about 28 cookies. It’s at least a three day process. Day one is make and bake. Day two is complete, which was mustache, eyebrows and hat. They are lined up like toy soldiers, ready for the next step.

Santa line-up

Day three is the beard. The mustache has to dry before doing the beard. After this is done and the beard is dry, they can be wrapped and packaged.

Gentlemen, Start your engines.

Occasionally we watch the Nascar races on TV. But a chance to drive with the Nascar Simulator was too good to pass up. His excitement grew as he realized, "Finally I get to drive." While he crashed more than drove, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Finally Driving

My youngest (pictured below) wasn't so enthused, but gets into it once he started driving. Maybe this is a mistake; he does have his driving permit. He came in ninth place and his top speed was 192mph. "Mom can I drive your car this fast?"

Mom, Can I go this fast in Your car?

pleasantly surprised

Busy living life today. Last night was different, it was a time for me. My husband didn't want to go out (had to be at work at midnight), but I did, so I went alone. Dressed to the nines, sort of. Enjoyed the live strings playing Christmas songs at the event, nibbled on the offerings. It wasn't a Christmas party, but it felt like one. Although I arrived late, I still enjoyed MY time out.
Then I came home and indulged in self care. A facial, foot and hand treatments. It was a pleasure to pamper myself. Perhaps I should designate Friday Night as fabulous Fridays, a time to care for myself. After years of not taking time for me, it is time to do so.
I felt renewed all day and was able to spend quality time with my children while their Dad slept.

Snow Day

This is a gift. The blanket of snow covers the dreary brownness of Autumn. Snow accentuates nature’s sculpture of trees. Watching the flakes fall is soothing to one's soul. It's light and fluffy, not good for snowballs.

snow coated

Cars sliding on and off the streets. Stay home if you can, take a break from the normal hustle and bustle. Trucks with snow plows rumble down the street casting plumes of snow into the air. The plows cover sidewalks with mounds of packed snow. Many things are cancelled, slowing today's pace, including mine.

An opportunity to do somethings that normally you wouldn't get to do. Sleep in on a weekday. Play in the snow. Bake cookies with the kids and of course shovel the white stuff. Curl up with a blanket and a good book. Phone calls to friends. Cups of hot chocolate, mulled cider, movies at home. If we had a fireplace, I'd light a fire. The options are endless.

Benefits

They say exercise increases your endorphines. There are many benefits to exercise. But I didn't think that losing your pants was one of them. Things are getting a little loose around here. The pants look like parachute pants on me and I refuse to wear them. I should be looking forward to purchasing new clothing, but I have some favorite articles that will be hard to part with. I plan on donating the pants that are falling off me. It'll be great to have that space. However, I dread finding replacements. So I plan to make due with what I have for now.

parachute pants ready for take off

I also noticed that my face seems to be thinning out. My preferences in food has changed. I haven't been on a scale since September, but will get on one by Christmas. I don't know what changes to anticipate, but I expect a decrease in weight becasue of my experience with the pants.

Yes, it's true. There is not a working scale in my house. Growing up there was one in the home, but my grandparents didn't have one or see a need for one. I decided not to be chained to the numbers. Instead, I'm changing my menu and my lifestyle.

Mall Rat, NOT!

My car went in for service yesterday. Argh, I'm grounded!

Being in the suburbs, you need a car. The city, five miles away, takes about an hour by bus. Not that I go downtown anymore. It holds nothing for me. The sidewalks are empty after everyone leaves work for the day. My travels now take me from one town to the next. Things are spread out. No centralization. One mall is 10 minutes away another in the other direction is 20 minutes away by car. Taking a bus to get to either mall would drive me nuts. (no Pun intended)

Personally, I prefer small shops. They contain items as unique as their owners. Not this sameness that is found nationally in all the malls. The competition is immense for these shopkeepers, I admire their fortitude and courage.

Where is Justice?

It's no wonder that it is said that "Justice is blind." When it becomes a “game of win at all costs”, we all lose. How can those people live with themsleves?
Sometimes the truth is twisted, embellished, exaggerated. It becomes a “game of win at all costs.” When things are misinterpreted, how can one prevail against that?

The truth is, all that one has left is their honor. They can still hold their head high and sleep well at night. It is disheartening that honorable people have to be put though this.

Exercise

Impending storm won't keep me away. A chance to escape. The pool is invitingly warm. Quite the change from last weeks teeth chattering experience. My muscles relaxed and stretched. My soul is refreshed, my spirit renewed.

Cat and Mouse

Dark grey skies opened up and poured out white flakes. Does Lake (Ontario) effect snow reach Springfield? With a strong wind, yes, it does. Stopped for gas, the prices were changing, up four cents from Thursday... going up six more cents today. So much for the dropping prices, but the prices are still better than what's found in Connecticut. As we continue up 91 and onto the Mass Pike, the snow accumulation increases in the Berkshire Mountains. We stop to shop. Managed to cross off a few things the Christmas list.

Though the snow continues to fall the Turnpike and NY Thruway are clear, but wet from melted snow.
The phone rings. Thank heavens for speakerphone.
"Mom where are you?"
Quickly calculating..."I'll be there in about twenty minutes"

"Well, I'm getting on the bus and we are going to lunch, I'm not staying at the pool alone."
Damn, I don't have a detailed map of the area. "Ok, I'll call when I get to RPI."
Call two:
"Tell me where you are?"
"I don't know"

"Can you find a street sign?"
"I'm at .... and Hoosick. Near a Subway and Ted's Fish Fry. If you get to Price Chopper, turn around."
Call three:
"Where are you?"
"I'm on my way, I see Ted's."
"Oh, I see you now."
I collect my precious and we decide to have lunch down by the Hudson River.
At the restaurant, I request a window table. The river is a muddy brown, reminding me of the Mississippi without all the marine traffic.
Cross river view Up river viewTried to take some more pictures, but the batteries gave out and the fresh ones were sitting on the kitchen table.

Uplifting event

**Warning this post may be TMI. Males also be warned, you may not be able to relate to this post.**

Growing up in the 60’s, protests were common and it was a time for free love. I was positive that bra and girdles (now called bodyshapers or shapewear) were torture devices made by men. I could understand why bra burnings occurred, though I never participated.

As a result, I never thought of having breast implants… having less means freedom. Flat is better, though I didn’t think “Twiggy” was an attractive role model. Thankfully, I have just enough. There are times when one must wear supportive undergarments. I would rebel as soon as I got home, taking my bra off, even before my shoes were removed.

My back is getting stronger and I have been exercising. It was time to go for a fitting. Unfortunately, Oprah aired a show on bras and jeans, so I delayed my visit. (I dislike crowds.) There were three fitters at the store. Two of them appeared to have attitude, I selected Linda, kinder soul to do my fitting. You don’t want people you do not like getting personal with you, do you? I didn’t. Thankfully that choice made the experience more pleasant. Linda was effervescent, and announced my new band width. Wow, I dropped four inches. Now, do they have bras in my size? Surprisingly, Linda returned with several pretty options and they fit. (Several months ago I was told they didn’t carry my size.) I chose the pink one below. It was smooth, seamless and comfortable. I decided to wear it and my old bra was placed in the bag.

bra No more ugly, ill-fitting bras.
