Sense of smell
My mother told me, “As a young girl I remember the fragrance of the hosta coming into my bedroom.” Imagine my surprise when I noticed a fragrant hosta blooming. How could I have missed this? There are several reasons. First, it is in a place that I do not often go by. Second, the hosta is crowded by lily of the valley and a yew. Crowded hostas do not bloom.
I surmise that the variety of hostas that my mother enjoyed was H. plantaginea. While I do not know the variety that is currently blooming, it is probably close to the fragrance that wafted into her girlhood bedroom.
